Sixty Fifth UN Day Celebrated in Ashgabat as Day of Unity of Nations

Ashgabat, 5 November 2010 – The United Nations agencies, representatives of the Government and public organizations of Turkmenistan as well as foreign embassies and international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan gathered together on 4 November at a reception at "President" hotel in Ashgabat to celebrate as one family the 65th birthday of the United Nations. Following the established tradition, this year’s UN Day celebration in Turkmenistan symbolized the unity of nations that underpins the UN Charter. The UN Day reception guests were welcomed by UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Lenni Montiel and Heads of the UN agencies accredited in Turkmenistan – Mr. Samphe Lhalungpa (UNICEF), Ms. Brita Helleland (UNHCR), Ms. Narine Sahakyan (UNDP), as well as Heads of Offices – Mr. Ercan Saka (UNODC), Jennet Appova (UNFPA), Tahir Seidov (IOM) and Serdar Jepbarov (IMF). Together with the Heads of UN agencies in Turkmenistan also stood on the stage the SRSG and Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Mr. Miroslav Jenca and United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Regional Director for Europe and the CIS Ms. Kori Udovicki, who was visiting Ashgabat for the regional launch of the 2010 Human Development Report. The Speaker of the National Parliament of Turkmenistan, Ms. Akja Nurberdiyeva, joined the hosts as a guest of honor representing the Government of Turkmenistan. View photos from the UN Day reception. The UN Day reception at "President" hotel started with an exhibition of cultures and traditions of countries represented by their embassies in Turkmenistan, including the UN agencies, featuring information stalls with all sorts of print publications, promotional items, banners and posters, photos, videos and souvenirs that spoke of cultural diversity and common human values. "On this day, with no sense of competition, we see a celebration of cultures and traditions of the countries represented in Turkmenistan, thus adhering to the principles and values of our organization. | "In the fast changing global environment that we face today, the pledge for commitment that the world nations made sixty five years ago, which is to maintain international peace and security and to promote social progress and better standards of life, becomes even more relevant. In the times of continuing financial crisis and economic downturn, we are expected to offer global solutions to the global challenges. But, as long as united we stand, and united we act, I am sure we will deliver more effective and more harmonized development results," said Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, UNDP Regional Director for Europe and the CIS Ms. Kori Udovicki. Greeting the guests, the Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, Mr. Miroslav Jenca, praised the UN cooperation with the Government of Turkmenistan, who is an active participant in solving the major problems of regional and world politics. “Today, more than ever, it is important that all countries of the world stand as one for the maintenance of international peace and security. Preventive diplomacy has taken a leading role in preserving peace, preventing conflicts and their resolution through a multilateral dialogue and cooperation,” he said. Congratulating the UN family in Turkmenistan on the 65th anniversary of the UN on behalf of the President of Turkmenistan, Speaker of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan Ms. Akja Nurberdiyeva noted that UN Day is the day uniting all the nations of the world. She expressed confidence that fruitful cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN will continue in the current framework in the name of achievement of the Millenium Development Goals and triumph of UN ideals.
