UNICEF Calls for Ensuring Turkmenistan Children’s Safety on RoadsAshgabat, 5 September 2013 – At a conference to mark the start of a month long campaign on road safety in Turkmenistan, UNICEF called for ensuring safety of children who are the most vulnerable road users. The campaign which lasts from 1 to 30 September advocates for making roads safe for drivers, passengers and pedestrians and promotes safe behaviours among Turkmenistan’s population.

"Ensuring safety, including safety on roads is one of the fundamental rights of children enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The road can be a dangerous place for children and young people. However, by uniting our efforts we can reduce their risks to a minimum," said UNICEF Turkmenistan Representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov at the Conference that gathered over four hundred participants from various ministries and agencies responsible for road safety.

The Conference was a start off event, followed by numerous activities targeted at raising awareness on safe driving, pedestrians’ rules and other measures to stay safe on roads. The Traffic Police under the Ministry of Interior Affairs, State Insurance Company, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and Medical Industry as well as municipalities across the country developed educational resources for children and adults. Media actively promotes safety on roads through public service announcements on radio and television and articles in newspapers and magazines.

UNICEF has actively contributed to the campaign activities through developing a series of information materials. In the run up to the start of the school year UNICEF placed a number of outdoor billboards near the schools promoting messages for children on safe street crossing. Also, the technical expertise was provided to the Ministry of Education by developing a package of lesson plans and extracurricular activities on road safety for kindergartens and schools.

The Government of Turkmenistan’s efforts are very timely in the light of UNICEF’s global call for road safety to be included in the post-2015 agenda and sustainable development goals. During the national consultation process on the post-2015 agenda, children and caregivers of Turkmenistan identified road safety as one of the priority areas for development.
