Mr. Eziz Khellenov, a Chairmen of the meeting, welcome participants and in accordance with the agenda he presented objectives of the Health Portal Development, briefed on its status and the results of the IT Assessment workshop held on 22 March, 2001.

Ms. Gulshat Amandurdieva, Chief Editor presented and distributed to participants UNFPA Newsletter’s first issue.

Then meeting continued by briefing per agencies:

WHO activities are mainly focused on prevention and control of communicable diseases. WHO provided the funds to the MoH and MI to conduct the AFP/ Polio surveillance activities in the country. Two cars have been purchased within the framework of malaria control programme and will be used in the malaria endemic areas. Measles lab equipment was delivered to Turkmenistan at the end of 2000 and was set up in February 2001 by WHO expert. On 19-23 March WHO jointly with the MoH and MI has organized the workshop on God Manufacturing Practice intended for the people involved in the pharmaceutical sector. Within the workshop, WHO expert conducted inspection of three main pharmaceutical plants of Turkmenistan. Equipment for the pilot hospitals within the CARAK programme (MCH), which will be delivered in April 2001. Institute of Eye Diseases was reported to conduct the activities on cataract prevention according to WHO methods.

Know How Fund.

3 centers for medical providers were opened in Henikgala. Training rooms in the MCH institute, Pediatrics department were equipped. Jointly with the Red Crescent leaflets on HIV/ AIDS/ STI control and video film on HIV/ AIDS distributed.

USAID

On 11 May 2001 center for retraining of the family physicians will be opened on basis of the Health House#1. The following activities were held devoting to the World Tuberculosis Day: on 22 March, 2001-Children Poster contest, 23 March, 2001-MoH & MI Conference, 24 March, 2001-Children Show-Performance in the Theatre named after Pushkin, the last two activities being supported by USAID/ Project Hope.

DHS: Preliminary Report has been approved for distribution among agencies. Final report will be discussed in Washington D.C. with participation of four representatives from MoH & MI and Turkmenmillihasabat.

UNAIDS

InfoTUK project has been developed and is ready for approval. UN agencies are procuring Devinfo software for use of all agencies and government partners. Four portals will be established: on Health, Environment, Education, and HIV/ AIDS. Women Bureau is planning to conduct training for UN staff on “Gender mainstreaming” on second half of April and all interested parties are invited. Separate project proposal can be developed for donors interested to support 16 civic organizations at Balkanabat with publication of diverse IEC materials.

UNFPA conducts training on use of modern contraceptives. ToT was organized in January, 2001 with participation of the WHO expert. In July-August, 2001 simultaneous training will be conducted by trainers in each velayat. 8 specialists have been nominated for training in Moscow on Adolescents RH services. 2 Turkmenistan representatives have been nominated for introductory mission to London on Integration of RH services in Primary Healthcare. Devinfo software is very efficient for CCA process and data presentations. Turkmenistan will receive contraceptive commodities in June 2001 in the amount of more than $100,000 in addition to UNFPA target activities.

During the meeting the attendants have updated the relevant information in the donors’ list and made comments on the summary of the 2000 Donor Sub-Group meetings on Health. All these comments were incorporated and the summary was slightly adjusted accordingly. Akjemal Magtymova informed all participants that the UNFPA IT project has been put on the Web and is available at the UNFPA office for the interested donors.
