Overview
The
proposed IEC project for increased level of knowledge
in the RH subprogram is designed to build on the success
of earlier support provided by UNFPA assistance to Turkmenistan
in selecting executing agencies. National experience has
been gained in implementing UNFPA programs and national
execution will be followed in the proposed RH subprogram.
The country population assessment indicated the need to
further the health reform agenda through the implementation
of school education in the field of RH. |

The project proposes to support the Ministry of Education
in strengthening its policy-making role. This is in particularly
in respect of the formulation of a reproductive health
policy that involves civil society and which devotes special
attention to the reproductive health needs of adolescents.
The mandate for health education rests with the Center
for Health Prevention and AIDS Control. The Center has
an extensive infrastructure, which has the potential to
reach every village, health facility and school. There
are centers in each of the five regions (velayats), which
activities are coordinated by the National Center Health
education at the community level, including schools and
industrial establishments is carried out mainly by family
doctors.
These programs are targeted mainly at women in the reproductive
age group and adolescents. At present time under the direction
of the Ministry of Education and close cooperation with
the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry and technical
support of UNFPA, the new school program in the field
of RH «Healthy Family - Healthy Generation» for 9th grade
students at the age of 15-17 is being introduced in schools.
At early 1999 this program and training materials have
been implemented in 17 school as a pilot activity. Gradually
this curriculum will be introduced to all students in
the ninth grade in all schools in Turkmenistan. Consequently,
a lack of teachers trained in the subject and educational
materials are major obstacles to the rapid development
and expansion of this program to all schools. |
