Ashgabat, 23 June 2010 – The UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Under-Secretary General Mr. Sergio de Queiroz Duarte visited the UN House within the framework of his visit to Ashgabat to participate in the international conference on disarmament in Central Asia and Caspian Basin. Mr. Duarte met with the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Mr. Lenni Montiel and other representatives of the UN agencies working in Turkmenistan such as Samphe Lhalungpa from UNICEF, Jennet Appova from UNFPA, Ercan Saka from UNODC, Nina Kolybashkina from UNDP and Tahir Seidov from IOM.

The UN Under-Secretary General was briefed on the major areas of work of the UN System in Turkmenistan and the framework of the UN-Turkmenistan cooperation. Mr. Duarte commended efforts of UN Agencies in supporting Turkmenistan’s national program of development and updated the meeting participants on the UN activities in the sphere of disarmament to promote global peace and security.
