World
Population Day
Report on Celebration of
World Population Day in Turkmenistan.
Since 1996, the United Nations Population Fund, Turkmenistan
has had a tradition to celebrate an annual World Population
Day to highlight the importance of population and development
issues. UNFPA FO in Turkmenistan organized several activities
as usual this year, such as:
- Developed and transmitted
TV quiz devoted to world population day on 8 and 11
July 2000 by National TV.
- On 10 July organized
Press Conference with the involvement of Mass media,
TV and Radio under the supervision of Mr. Jens Wandel,
UNFPA Representative and UNFPA FO staff.
- On 11 July 2000 Organized
Action-Show devoted to the World Population Day jointly
with the Youth Organization of Turkmenistan and UNFPA.
More than 1000 people of Turkmenistan attended this
show. Similar action-shows have been organized in
each Velayat of Turkmenistan at the same day.
- Publicized an articles
about RH and WPD on local newspapers, such as "Neutral
Turkmenistan" (10 July 2000), "Nesil" (9,10, 11 July
2000), and "Watan" newspaper (11 July 2000 )
- Slogans with different
messages on World Population Day prepared and hung
up in the central districts of Turkmenistan.
- Organized Interview
for radio program "Char Taraptan" INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS
Youth-oriented Information and Resource Centers in
Turkmenistan Reproductive health Information and Resource
centers were opened under the velayat subdivisions
of the Magtymguly Youth Union of Turkmenistan. Their
establishment is the first step towards the realization
of the long-term Healthy-Way-of-Life Youth-Oriented
Program developed by the Youth Union of Turkmenistan
(YUT) in co-operation with the UN Population Fund
Agency in Turkmenistan. The YUT informs, the aim of
the project is rendering an active assistance to state
programs, sharpening minds of the youth on spiritual
and moral principles of health way of life and elimination
of negative tendencies in the youth and adult medium.
The project is scheduled for as long as three years.
In particular, within its framework contests of posters
and drawings among the schools and higher educational
establishments of the country and series of radio
and TV programs will be held in 2000. As for the information
and resource centers, they will become the main basis
for elaboration of priority policies in the reproductive
health propaganda, such as large-scale actions aimed
at drug and smoking control, sociological research
studies, development of methodical supplies for the
youth. For now the information and resource centers
were opened in velayat centers only. In 2001 their
number will be doubled. The UN Population Fund provided
the centers with computers, fax machines and office
equipment. The YUT cooperates closely with a number
of other UN representative agencies in Turkmenistan.
For instance, last year large propagandistic events
have been organized under the support of the UN AIDS,
UNICEF which embraced large youth audience. Nowadays
the total number of the YUT members accounts to 550
people.
