UNFPA debates Turkmenistan’s preparation for census 

UNFPA debates Turkmenistan’s preparation for census Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, 26 February, 2009 – Mr Matthew Kahane, UNFPA Country Director a.i. for Turkmenistan is visiting Ashgabat from February 26 to March 1, 2009.

The purpose of Mr Kahane’s visit is to familiarize with the implementation of the UNFPA country programme for Turkmenistan for 2005-2009. Mr Kahane will also meet with the representatives of the UNFPA partner organizations in Turkmenistan, including Mejlis, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Institute of Democracy and the Human Rights, Ministry of Health and Medical Industries, and the State Statistics Committee to discuss country programme priorities for the next programme cycle starting in 2010 in the areas of reproductive health and rights, population and development, and gender equality.

Meetings will also be arranged with the Heads of UN Agencies to discuss UN system-wide cooperation for advancing the UN reform.

Mr Matthew Kahane has spent almost 40 years within the United Nations. Prior to joining UNFPA Mr Kahane held several senior positions in the United Nations, including United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nepal (2003-2008) and in Tajikistan (2000-2003), United National Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative/UNFPA Representative/UNDCP Representative in Poland (1995-2000) and UNDP Representative in Belarus(1992-199). He is currently based in the UNFPA Country Office in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
