Turkmen Specialists are Trained on Rehabilitation of Drug Addicts in Penitentiary Institutions    

Image Ashgabat, 5 March 2009 – Today, a 4-day training on prevention and treatment of drug addicts for over twenty doctors, social workers, psychiatrists and personnel of the penitentiary system finished in Ashgabat.

The training was aimed at raising participants’ awareness of social rehabilitation, treatment of drug addicts in penitentiary institutions and sharing best practices in social rehabilitation and social support to drug-addicts. 

Trainers introduced the participants to drug addiction symptoms, mental mechanisms of addiction and its types, labour therapy, methods of assertive behaviour and motivation of drug addicts to undertake the Atlantis rehabilitation programme.

The Atlantis rehabilitation programme envisages therapy of drug-addict ex-inmates. The key components of this programme are the philosophy of the 12-step programme approach and participation in the programme.

 

The training was facilitated by the EU-UNDP Central Asia Drug Action Programme (CADAP). It was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, treatment and labour facility of the Tejen city, the United Nations Office for Drug Control (UNODC), NGOs “Bosfor” and “Keyik Okara”, the Information Center of the Ministry of Health of Turkmenistan, the HIV/AIDS National Center, the State Medical Institute and Narcological Center.

 

The overall objective of the EU-UNDP CADAP Programme is to foster a public health approach to drug demand and an interdiction approach to drug supply in line with the European Union drug strategies.  CADAP is funded by the European Commission and implemented by UNDP.
