Turkmenistan’s health care specialists attend training programme on effective adolescent care and health

Turkmenistan’s health care specialists attend training programme on effective adolescent care and health Ashgabat, 28 May 2009 – A delegation from Turkmenistan has returned from Russia where its members participated in EuTeach Summer School for adolescent health care specialists from CIS countries. The Summer School was organized by Health Academy of In-Service Training in St. Petersburg. The delegation comprised of national health specialists and staff of UNFPA and UNICEF.

The programme was based on the European training in effective adolescent care and health (EuTeach) programme, which is adopted for Russian speaking specialists including psychologists, social workers, social scientists, youth workers who are either directly involved with adolescent health or who teach others about adolescent health.

Participants have learned issues unique to adolescence (definition of adolescence, bio-psychosocial development, gender issues, exploratory/experimental behavior, communication skills, family interactions, impact of the socio-economic and cultural context, legal issues); specific themes (sexuality and reproductive health, mental health, medical problems including chronic conditions, substance misuse, intentional and unintentional injuries, violence, nutrition, physical activity); and issues of public health as applied to adolescents (epidemiology, public health, youth friendly health services, health promotion in adolescence and school health, advocacy).

There was also a visit to Youth Friendly Clinic, where Turkmenistan delegation has learned best practices in establishing friendly services for adolescents in Russia, including experiences of Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Participants have also learned best practices in developing behavior change materials for adolescents and families.

It is expected that joint participation in the Summer School will help to create conditions for development and introduction of similar youth friendly services in Turkmenistan. Participation in the Summer School will also be a step forward for further collaboration between two agencies, UNFPA and UNICEF.
