Ashgabat, 20 January 2010 – In a recent interview with Turkmenistan’s TV journalists UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Lenni Montiel on behalf of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed gratitude to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the Government of Turkmenistan for providing USD 500 000 as humanitarian assistance to the people of Haiti. He noted that this gesture is consistent with the Charter and spirit of the United Nations.
“Turkmenistan, who experienced all the dire consequences of the strong Ashgabat earthquake of 1948, cannot but sympathize with the earthquake victims,” the President of Turkmenistan said in his message of condolence to the United Nations Secretary General and the President of the Republic of Haiti.
“Guided by humanitarian principles, Turkmenistan, in the first hours after the devastating earthquake, came up with a proposal to provide assistance to the Haitian people at this difficult time,” Lenni Montiel said. He also emphasized that Turkmenistan is among many countries that support the work of UN in Haiti. “This work is very difficult in an environment where so far communication system has not been re-established, infrastructure has been destroyed, and there is acute shortage of food, medicine and even water,” he stressed.
The cash aid was transferred by Turkmenistan to a special account of the United Nations. In this regard, the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan assured the President and the people of Turkmenistan that the funds would be used for immediate needs of women, men and children of Haiti who are now experiencing particular difficulties.
Availing himself of this opportunity, the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan also expressed the United Nations’ willingness to support various initiatives of the Government of Turkmenistan in the sphere of preparedness for natural disasters.
