United Nations staff in Turkmenistan support World Environment Day campaign

United Nations staff in Turkmenistan support World Environment Day campaignAshgabat, 17 June 2010 – UN staff in Turkmenistan participated in a voluntary cleaning of the park located in front of the UN House in Ashgabat to observe the World Environment Day on 5 June. This initiative brought together staff and management of different United Nations agencies resident in Turkmenistan, including UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNODC, UNHCR, WHO and staff of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy (UNRCCA).

This event celebrating the World Environment Day resulted in collection of more than hundred bags of garbage and town refuse in the territory of the park. The collected garbage and town refuse was loaded and transported to a municipal waste collection site.

United Nations staff in Turkmenistan support World Environment Day campaign“Celebration of the World Environment Day has become an important global campaign and every individual can make a difference through contributing to a cleaner environment,” said Lenni Montiel, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan. “Through this action, which staff of UN agencies in Turkmenistan and UNRCCA conducted on voluntary basis, we made our small contribution to preserve the nature in the capital city of Ashgabat.”

The World Environment Day is celebrated by the international community every year on 5 June and observed in many parts of the planet. Every year, the World Environment Day is observed under a specific theme and the theme of this year’s campaign is “Many Species, One Planet, One Future.”
