Electronic tool will help Turkmenistan health workers to manage childhood illnesses
 Ashgabat, 6 September 2011 – UNICEF Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan have launched an innovative initiative that will help the primary health workers, teachers and students of medical education institutions and researchers to have access to computerized self-learning package on Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) and Pediatric HIV care.
The IT course called "Integrated Management of Childhood Illness Computerized Adaptation and Training Tool" (ICATT), developed with technical support from UNICEF and WHO to improve primary health care and family and community practices, will now be adapted into the local context and made available in Turkmen language. The ICATT resource comprises diverse learning tools, ranging from videos, library with technical documents and information, animation, charts, exercises and training guides.
"Use of information technology and standard protocol based approaches have helped revolutionize child and maternal health care around the world, and has the potential to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of the healthcare in general," said Samphe Lhalungpa, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan. "As the Government of Turkmenistan is putting technology in the heart of its reform processes, UNICEF is pleased to assist in introducing e-learning tools for health workers and we hope that the adapted electronic IMCI and Pediatric HIV care guidelines will be effective," he added.
The initiative began in August with an ICATT introductory workshop conducted by two UNICEF international experts for the MCH Center and Health Information Centre specialists, IMCI and PMTCT master trainers and Medical University and college teachers. During the next few months experts from the Mother and Child Healthcare (MCH) Centre of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry will adapt the self-learning IT package and design flexible training approaches that could be used for distance learning or classroom training of health workers in both pre-service and in-service settings.
