Message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on International Women’s Day8 March 2010 – Gender equality and women’s empowerment are fundamental to the global mission of the United Nations to achieve equal rights and dignity for all. This is a matter of basic human rights, as enshrined in our founding Charter and the Universal Declaration. It is part of the Organization’s very identity. But equality for women and girls is also an economic and social imperative. Until women and girls are liberated from poverty and injustice, all our goals -- peace, security, sustainable development -- stand in jeopardy. Fifteen years ago at the Fourth World Conference on Women, Governments pledged to advance equality, development and peace for all women everywhere.

REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR DRUG ADDICTED CONVICTS INAUGURATED IN TURKMENISTAN
Rehabilitation Centre for Drug Addicted Convicts Inaugurated in Turkmenistan Tejen (Turkmenistan), 26 February 2010 – The EU-UNDP Central Asia Drug Action Programme (CADAP) handed over a refurbished and equipped building of the rehabilitation centre at the Labour and Treatment Facility in the city of Tejen to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan. The total cost of refurbishment works and equipment (furniture, medical and office equipment) amounted to €203,000. Representatives of the Europa House, TACIS, UNDP, UNODC, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the State Service on Fight against Drug Abuse participated in the handover ceremony. At present, Turkmenistan along with other Central Asian countries supports the Atlantis counselling twelve-step programme to stop drug dependence and introduces community reintegration measures for prisoners and ex-prisoners in pilot prisons.
 
CENTRAL BANK, UNDP AND USAID ORGANIZE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ACCOUNTING REFORM IN TURKMENISTAN
Central Bank, UNDP and USAID Organize International Conference on Accounting Reform in TurkmenistanAshgabat, 3 February 2010 – Today, a two-day conference titled “Accounting and Auditing Reforms in Turkmenistan: Analysis and Perspectives” commenced at “President” Hotel. It was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Central Bank of Turkmenistan. The conference brought together over 80 participants from international accounting and auditing organizations as well as national ministries, agencies, research institutions and banks involved in reforming Turkmenistan’s accounting system. The conference aims to promote the introduction of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) into Turkmenistan’s accounting system in support of the Government’s efforts to implement economic reforms, attract foreign investments, and develop efficient capital markets in the country.
 
TURKMENISTAN EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH HAITIAN PEOPLE
Turkmenistan Expresses Solidarity with Haitian People Recalling Tragic Experience of 1948 Ashgabat EarthquakeAshgabat, 21 January 2010Guided by humanitarian principles and acting in the spirit of the United Nations Charter, Turkmenistan has quickly responded to the call of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to all members of the international community “to come to Haiti's aid in this hour of need.” At an enlarged meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers last Thursday, 15 January, the President of Turkmenistan announced a humanitarian aid to the Haitian people worth USD 500 000 that was immediately transferred to a special account of the United Nations. "Turkmenistan, who experienced all the dire consequences of the strong Ashgabat earthquake of 1948, cannot but sympathize with the earthquake victims," the President of Turkmenistan said during the government meeting. In his letter of condolence to the UN Secretary General, President Berdimuhamedov asked Ban Ki-moon to pass on his deepest condolences to families and relatives of those who died, and expressed his sympathy and support to the victims of this natural disaster.
 

 

 

 

 

 


 The UN in Turkmenistan is committed to work as a cohesive team to support government to fulfill its human rights obligations and to achieve its national development plans and nationalized MDGs. The UN will promote the fullest possible government ownership for achieving this goal, with the support of all resident and non-resident agencies, and the donor community. The UN is committed to engage actively with international development partners, civil society and the private sector to harmonize development assistance in the country in line with the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness and the 2005 World Summit Outcome.
