UNFPA SUPPORTS YOUTH EMPOWERMENT THROUGH PEER EDUCATION
UNFPA Supports Youth Empowerment through Peer EducationAshgabat, 31 August 2010A series of Y-PEER trainings were successfully held in Turkmenistan this month, supported by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund.  A four day Y-PEER Summer Camp was organized in collaboration with the Youth Union of Turkmenistan and Health Information Center from 10 until 13 August 2010, in Ashgabat.  Concurrently, two training in Dashoguz were held back-to-back from 10 until 19 August 2010. More than 65 young people from the capital and five velayats were trained on the main principles of peer education to become the members of the Y-PEER Youth Network of Turkmenistan and to deliver peer education training programmes in their region. The trainings were conducted by medical specialists and Y-PEER master trainers, who took part in the national Training for Trainers (TOT) and Theatre-Based Peer Education (TBPE) trainings, conducted by the international trainer in June in Ashgabat.
 
RESIDENTS OF CASPIAN COASTAL VILLAGES LEARN EFFECTIVE METHODS OF POULTRY FARMING AND CATTLE BREEDIN
Residents of Caspian Coastal Villages Learn Effective Methods of Poultry Farming and Cattle Breeding in Local Climatic ConditionsAshgabat, 27 August 2010 – Residents of the Caspian coastal villages of Chekishlyar, Garagel, Belek and Gyzylsuv of Balkan province, who started breeding poultry and cattle as an alternative method of income generation with a view of preserving the biological diversity of the Caspian Sea, enhanced their knowledge and got professional advice in the course of a one day seminar in the city of Balkanabad organized by the joint project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The seminar was also attended by representatives of the administration of Balkan province, the Department for Nature Protection for Balkan province, the Khazar State Reserve as well as specialists of the agricultural sector of district administrations.
 
"BEYOND THE NUMBERS" – WHO INITIATIVE ADVOCACY IN TURKMENISTAN
“Beyond the numbers” – WHO initiative advocacy in TurkmenistanAshgabat, 27 August 2010 – The international consultants Tatyana Buzdugan and Kanat Suhanberdiyev provided advisory services within the joint project “Improving access and utilization of quality maternal health services” of Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan and UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, from 16 until 20 August 2010 in Ashgabat.  The purpose of the mission was to introduce the World Health Organization (WHO) initiative “Beyond the numbers” and to share the successful practices in improving maternal health and decreasing maternal near miss cases with the Turkmenistan counterparts. The international health and development community has repeatedly called for action to address this issue; governments, including Turkmenistan, have formally committed themselves to doing so, notably at the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994, and by adopting the Millennium Development Goals, where improvement of maternal health is the essential prerequisite for development and poverty reduction.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON INTERAGENCY COOPERATION ON POPULATION AND DEVELOPMENT ISSUES
International workshop on interagency cooperation on population and development issuesAshgabat, 18 August 2010The international workshop on interagency cooperation on population and development issues was organized by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, in collaboration with the Institute of Strategic Planning and Economic Development of Turkmenistan on 11 August 2010 in Grand Turkmen Hotel. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Sergiu Sainchuk, Deputy Minister of Labour, Social Protection and Family of Republic of Moldova, Mr. Ulan Kasymbekov, member of the Parliament of Republic of Kazakhstan, and the representatives of the UNFPA offices in Turkmenistan, Moldova and Russia. The representatives of Mejlis (Parliament) of Turkmenistan, State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan, ministries of Economy and Development, Education, Social Welfare, Healthcare and Medical Industry, National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan and Women’s Union of Turkmenistan participated in the workshop.
 
THE GOVERNMENT OF TURKMENISTAN STRENGTHENS CAPACITY IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM
The Government of Turkmenistan strengthens capacity in the juvenile justice systemAshgabat, 17 August 2010 – The United Nations Children’s Fund jointly with the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights of Turkmenistan has conducted a two day workshop on alignment of the Turkmen juvenile justice system with the international standards. This took place in Mary city. The workshop included Mary velayat representatives from the law enforcement agencies, local municipalities, health and education officials, as well as the Youth Organization and the Women’s Union of Turkmenistan. The second workshop on alignment of the juvenile justice system with the international standards will be conducted on 20-21 August 2010 in Ashgabat for high level governmental officials.
 
NATIONAL PROGRAMME ON TUBERCULOSIS TO BE STRENGTHEN WITH UN SUPPORT
National Programme on Tuberculosis to be strengthen with UN supportAshgabat, 12 August 2010The System of Monitoring and Evaluation within the National Tuberculosis Programme of Turkmenistan has been assessed by national monitoring and evaluation specialists at a one-day workshop in Ashgabat. The workshop was organized by the United Nations Development Programme and Global Fund Grant Implementation Unit for the project “Purposeful strengthening and expanding qualified services on tuberculosis diagnostics and treatment in Turkmenistan” jointly with the Country Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan. Overall, more than thirty monitoring and evaluation (M&E) specialists participated in the workshop, including representatives from the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, Centre for Prophylaxis of Tuberculosis, regional tuberculosis hospitals, tuberculosis specialists of the Ministry of Interior of Turkmenistan, and representatives of the National Red Crescent Society. Dr Andrei Dadu, World Health Organization expert and Dr Arman Toktabayanov, Grant Manager of the Tuberculosis Project Implementation Unit from Kazakhstan presented the M&E requirements for the Global Fund grants and M&ESS assessment tool.
