UNICEF Regional Director visits Turkmenistan

UNICEF Regional Director visits Turkmenistan24 March 2010 – Regional Director for UNICEF CEE/CIS Steven Allen meets Turkmen children, 2010 Regional Director of UNICEF CEE/CIS Steven Allen meets Turkmenistan art school children and presents certificates.

UNICEF Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CEE/CIS), Steven Allen, is visiting Turkmenistan on 21-24 March to meet with high level officials of the Government. He will be discussing potential ways of broadening partnerships that benefit children given the new Country Programme of Cooperation for 2010-2015 between the Government of Turkmenistan and UNICEF.

During his three day visit, Mr Allen will call on the President of Turkmenistan H.E. Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov to review the progress the Government of Turkmenistan has made in the area of child health, education and social development. He will also discuss the priority areas of collaboration for the new Government-UNICEF Country Programme for 2010-2015. Meetings are planned with the Chairperson of the Mejlis (Parliament) Akja Nurberdiyeva, Deputy Chairpersons of the Cabinet of Ministers Rashid Meredov, Hydyr Saparliyev and Maysa Yazmuhamedova to discuss major child rights related reform areas.

Mr Allen will also meet children who participated in an art project initiated by UNICEF and the Ministry of Culture and TV and Radio Broadcasting of Turkmenistan. In his capacity as UNICEF Regional Director, Mr Allen will review the UNICEF Country Programme in Turkmenistan. Mr Allen has more than 30 years experience with UNICEF in various capacities in UNICEF headquarters, regional and field offices. This is his first visit to Turkmenistan.
