Turkmenistan’s health officials and UNICEF initiate discussions on population’s healthy nutrition

Turkmenistan’s health officials and UNICEF initiate discussions on population’s healthy nutritionAshgabat, 30 July 2010 – Nutrition was a major topic of discussion during a four day workshop conducted this week by the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The workshop presented an opportunity for representatives of government agencies to discuss various aspects of nutrition, including food safety, flour fortification, salt iodization, breastfeeding, safe water, vitamin supplementation, and balanced nutrition of pregnant women, young children and schoolchildren.

Led by Shamil Tajibayev, international expert in nutrition, the workshop aimed at familiarizing participants with the latest trends in nutrition as well as emphasizing the country’s need to develop a comprehensive nutrition policy in line with international norms and standards. Monitoring and evaluation components of flour fortification and salt iodization were also discussed during the workshop.

Since early 2000, UNICEF has provided the technical assistance to the Government of Turkmenistan in addressing nutrition related issues in the country. UNICEF’s advocacy led to Turkmenistan’s Government initiative to address iodine deficiency through salt iodization programme and anemia prevention through flour fortification, both programmes fully financed by the Government.

The workshop participants were from the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, including Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Ashgabat and velayats, Scientific-Clinical Centre on Mother and Child Healthcare, State Medical Institute; Ministry of Education, Ministry of Trade, Food Industry Association, Turkmen Bread Association, and State Committee on Fishing Industry.
