Ashgabat, 11 November 2011 – On November 4, 2011, as a result of effective cooperation and coordination between UN and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Mission of International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Turkmenistan provided a 2-hour lecture on "IOM Programmes and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings in Central Asia" for students and teaching staff of the Institute of Foreign Relations of Turkmenistan. The lecture was attended by more than 60 students.

UNDP staff enhance knowledge on UN’s workplace policy and programme on HIV and AIDS     

UNDP staff enhance knowledge on UN’s workplace policy and programme on HIV and AIDSAshgabat, 12 September 2011 – UNDP staff strengthened their knowledge on the UN’s workplace policy and programme on HIV and AIDS at a recent UN Cares awareness session organized by the UNDP country office.

The session was held for the first group out of 75 staff. The session participants were briefed on the objectives of UN Cares programme and learned the epidemiology of HIV and AIDS in the world, Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, and situation in the country. Through understanding the definitions of HIV and AIDS, modes of HIV transmission, prevention, symptoms and treatment, sexually transmitted infections and drug prevention issues, the staff learned how to protect themselves and their families. Participants also raised their awareness on stigma and discrimination issues with regard to HIV, the United Nations HIV/AIDS personnel policy and 10 minimum standards at the workplace.

Discussions during the session covered a range of topics related to HIV prevention and individual protection as well as UN system support to HIV positive staff. The participants were also informed about and provided with copies of the booklet Living in a world with HIV for the UN staff and their families.

"We all need to understand HIV better. Through UN Cares as the common UN system workplace programme on HIV/AIDS, we are determined to ensure that the UN staff in Turkmenistan is provided up to date information and is aware about rights and responsibilities in relation to HIV and AIDS, and that we make the UN a model of how the workplace should respond to it," said Lenni Montiel, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative.
