STATELESSNESS: MORE THAN 3,000 STATELESS PEOPLE GIVEN TURKMEN NATIONALITY Dashoguz, 7 December 2011 (UNHCR) – As soon as she was handed her citizenship papers, Guljahan Egenova began thinking excitedly about the whole new future ahead of her. "I am proud," said the pretty 24-year-old during a recent ceremony in the northern Turkmenistan city of Dashoguz. She had been stateless since 1995, when her parents moved to Turkmenistan. "With my new nationality, I get the right to pursue higher studies, I get the right to vote and I will be able to travel freely," the young woman said, with a big smile.

Ashgabat, 29 November 2011 – The decision of the UN Country Team to expand UN visibility in the country has been translated into an initiative to deliver lectures to the students of the Foreign Relations Institute of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan. Heads of each agency stationed in the country, including UNDP, UNFPA, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNODC, WHO, International Organization for Migration (IOM), World Bank Group (WB), and the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia (UNRCA), received an opportunity to speak to the faculty and students of the Institute and tell about the mission, goals and activities of their organizations at the global and country levels. |
Ashgabat, 26 November 2011 – The UNDP Country Office in Turkmenistan and the Israeli Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation in areas of mutual interest to enhance the effectiveness of their development efforts in Turkmenistan. The overall objective of the MOU is to build cooperation to serve development needs of Turkmenistan in the areas of private sector development, environmental governance and climate change. Activities under this MOU will focus on provision of advisory support, capacity building of national partners, research cooperation and sharing best practices in these areas. |
Ashgabat, 24 November 2011 – Sulgun is passionate about children’s rights issues and has posted a number of articles in local newspapers describing the role of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). A third year student from the Institute of International Relations, she knows about UNICEF Turkmenistan’s programmes and takes time to learn more about UNICEF’s work globally. When UNICEF Turkmenistan Representative Samphe Lhalungpa visited the Institute of International Relations with a presentation on the rights of children on 18 November, Sulgun highlighted the fact that in just two days the world would mark the CRC’s 22nd anniversary and congratulated UNICEF and her student fellows. Sulgun also mentioned that she had benefited from an earlier orientation session on media reporting and children’s rights facilitated by UNICEF Regional Communication Adviser at her Institute. |
Ashgabat, 23 November 2011 – The Inter-ministerial group members responsible for the implementation and coordination of the Turkmenistan National Programme on Early Childhood Development (ECD) completed a week long workshop where they discussed the latest trends in the area of early childhood development as well as an implementation phase of the Programme. The workshop group comprised of the specialists from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, analyzed the strategic provisions of the ECD National Programme and drafted an action plan that will help the Government to effectively implement the Programme. The specialists identified measurable goals and outcomes of the Programme, implementation strategies, and what system capacities the country will need to achieve the set objectives.

Ashgabat, 23 November 2011 – Students of the Institute of International Relations of Turkmenistan learned about UNDP’s mission, scope of activities and UNDP’s role in the area of human development in a lecture delivered by Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan Narine Sahakyan. Regular lectures for students of the Institute of International Relations about work of the UN agencies in Turkmenistan are part of the initiative of the United Nations system in Turkmenistan to expand outreach activities on the occasion of the UN Day celebrations in Turkmenistan. Ms. Sahakyan briefed the students about UNDP’s goals, structure, programmes implemented globally and on the country level. It was specially noted that UNDP’s primary focus is to help build nations which can withstand crisis, drive and sustain the kind of growth which improves the quality of life for everyone. |

Ashgabat, 11 November 2011 – On November 4, 2011, as a result of effective cooperation and coordination between UN and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Mission of International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Turkmenistan provided a 2-hour lecture on "IOM Programmes and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings in Central Asia" for students and teaching staff of the Institute of Foreign Relations of Turkmenistan. The lecture was attended by more than 60 students. The main goal of the lecture was to familiarize students and teaching staff of the Institute with the activities of the International Organization for Migration in Central Asia, particularly in Turkmenistan, as well as with the Human Trafficking issues and fight against organized crime. |
