Workshop for specialists of TV and Radio Company

Subject: "Entertainment -Education Programing for Population Policy Development in Central Asia" held on November 6-22, 1999 in Ashgabat .
  1. Introduction: The workshop is offered over three consecutive weeks.
  2. Workshop Description: Radio has demonstrated its ability to make substantial contributions to social development around the world. To be effective, radio must be systematic and entertaining. This three-week workshop allowed participants to increase their knowledge and to develop skills and techniques in research and program production that are essential for the development of effective radio programing to support population planning and reproductive health strategies in projects initiated by UNESCO in Central Asia.

  3. Workshop on Implementation of School Curriculum in RH on Subject: "Development of new school curriculum in 9th grades on RH", held on 16-20 September, 1997 in Ashgabat with the involvement of Ms. Rebello Stephani, UNFPA CST International Expert. 30 specialists all over the Turkmenistan trained. As a result of this training developed new school program for 9th grade students on RH. This program has been approved by Ministry of Health on March 11, 1998.
  4. Workshop on "Training on new school curriculum for 9th grade students in RH" hold on 19-24 January 1998 in Ashgabat with the participation of Ms. Jean Robson, International Expert. Total number of people trained are 30.



Volunteers CBD program

i) On March 23-27, 1999 was conducted the workshop on training of NGOs officers on project formulation and budgeting skills.
ii) The workshop was conducted with the assistance of CST/UNFPA adviser Mr.Javed Ahmad and 18 people participated: 10 people from Ashgabat city, 2 people from Dashoguz velayat, 2 people from Mary velayat, 2 people from Balkan velayat, 2 people from Lebap velayat
iii) Participants consists from doctors, health care and education specialists, specialists from medical Prevention and AIDS Control Center
iv) Goal of the workshop is to provide project proposal writing skills and acquainting all participating NGOs with reproductive health and family planning issues


Workshop for NGOs on implementation of mini - projects and financial management

(i) On May 26-28, 1999 was conducted the workshop on training for NGOs officers on implementation of mini-projects and financial management
(ii) The workshop was conducted by UNFPA staff and 20 people participated: 7 people from Ashgabat city, 4 people from Balkan velayat, 2 people from Dashoguz velayat, 3 people from Lebap velayat, 4 people from Mary velayat
(iii) Participants consists from NGOs representatives, doctors, health care and education specialists, specialists from medical Prevention and AIDS Control Center
(iv) Goal of the workshop is to improve project-proposals writing skills, to familiarize with UNFPA financial formats, various issues on project implementation
(v) Participants of the workshop is the qualified specialists, representatives of different organizations. Workshop will support National service on RH in Turkmenistan

Role of NGOs in RH

v) On March 17, 1999 was conducted the workshop "Role of NGOs in RH"
vi) The workshop was conducted with the assistance of UNFPA and organized by IPPF EN Field Office for Central Asia. 25 people participated: 16 people from Ashgabat city, 2 people from Dashoguz velayat, 2 people from Mary velayat, 3 people from Balkan velayat, 2 people from Lebap velayat
vii) Participants consists from representatives of established and budding NGOs, doctors, health care and education specialists
viii) Goal of the workshop is to determine priorities of RH for associated organizations, working with population; to search a possibility for development of NGO sector in reproductive health/reproductive rights
ix) During the workshop it was nominated NGOs, working in RH, clarify a possibility of establishment Network of NGOs in RH field.

Workshop in support of CBD activities

x) On September 21-27, 1999 was conducted the workshop in support of CBD activities
xi) The workshops were conducted with the assistance of UNFPA staff and organized by UNESCO consultant Mr.Yousuf Qureshi and 40 people participated: 20 people in Mary velayat and 20 people in Dashoguz velayat. Participants consists from doctors, health care and education specialists, NGOs representatives
xii) Goal of the workshops is to provide information and material to participants that will assist in better implementation of the National Reproductive Health/Family Planning programme.

Role and relevance of IPPF membership in the context of FPA governance and management

(vi) On September 28-29, 1999 was conducted the workshop "Role and relevance of IPPF membership in the context of FPA governance and management" for NGOs officers
(vii) The workshop was conducted by UNFPA staff and organized by IPPF EN Field Office for Central Asia. 20 people participated: 7 people from Ashgabat city, 4 people from Balkan velayat, 2 people from Dashoguz velayat, 3 people from Lebap velayat, 4 people from Mary velayat (viii) Participants consists from representatives of local and international NGOs, doctors, health care and education specialists
(ix) Goal of the workshop is to identify possible ways of Family Planning Association development in Turkmenistan, by which Association would firmly stand out as democratic and sustainable NGO, through empowerment of the Board
(x) Participants of the workshop is the qualified specialists, representatives of different organizations. Workshop will support National service on RH in Turkmenistan.

NGOs development in the context of IPPF membership

(xi) On November 29, 1999 was conducted the workshop "NGOs development in the context of IPPF membership" for NGOs officers
(xii) The workshop was conducted by UNFPA staff and organized by IPPF EN Field Office for Central Asia. 20 people participated: 7 people from Ashgabat city, 4 people from Balkan velayat, 2 people from Dashoguz velayat, 3 people from Lebap velayat, 4 people from Mary velayat
(xiii) Participants consists from representatives of local and international NGOs, doctors, health care and education specialists
(xiv) Goal of the workshop is to identify possible ways of NGOs development in the context of IPPF membership

Workshop for training of specialists on improving public awareness through mass media in RH field

i) Enter-Education Programming of Population Policy Development in Central Asia for mass media has been organized on November 6 till 22,1999
ii) In the conduct of the workshop with the assistance of International consultants for IEC and mass media from Ohio University participated 17 people (7 representatives of Uzbek National TV/Radio Company, 1 participant from National TV Company of Tadjikistan, 5 person from National TV&Radio Company of Turkmenistan)
iii) Goals of the workshop are: To increase knowledge and to develop skills and techniques in research and program production, that is essential for the development of effective radio programming to support population planning and reproductive health strategies in projects initiated by UNESCO and UNFPA in Central Asia
iv) Participants of the workshop is qualified specialists from National TV&padio Companies of Turkmenistan, Tadjikistan and Uzbekistan.Workshop was conducted

Develop manual for teachers on RH


Since January 1, 1999 after approval of school curriculum in RH implementation of this subject started in 17 schools of Ashgabat, including Akhal Velayat. At the same time development of Manual for teaching RH course in 9th grades started with the assistance of experienced biology teachers of Ministry of Education and leading specialists of Ministry of Health of Turkmenistan. At the moment has been finalized development of following themes of this Manual: · "Society and Culture" (Concept of Gender Role. Religion and legislation in relation to RH). · "Relationship in the family" (Concept of friendship, meeting and love) · "Pubertat period in the body of teenagers" · "Personal skills of teenagers" (concept of value, decisions and persistent and feeling of help) · "Prevention of some infection deseases " (STDs, AIDS) · "Concept on bad effect of smoking, alkohol, drugs" ii) Conducted all beforementioned lessons on RH withh the participation of representatives : · Ministry of Education · UNFPA National Experts in Turkmenistan · UNFPA CST Advisers Ms. Jean Robson, Ms.Malica Ratne Casttele

Training of biology teachers on adoption of newly developed school curriculum in 9th grades in RH field

i) Two days training seminar on "Discussion of teaching method and development of lessons in RH field " has been conducted for biology teachers of Ashgabat and Akhal Velayat with the involvement of UNFPA National Experts in Turkmenistan. Each teacher made a presentation on certain subject using their visial materials and handouts. After presentation several recommendatons discussed and passed. Recent seminar was very interesting and fruitful
ii)30 people participated in each workshop . Participants from: Ashgabat - 30 people Akhal Velayat - 30 people
iii) Representatives from: biology teachers
iv)Goal of the workshop. Exchange of experience between teachers implementing this course
v)Particippants of the workshop is the qualified specialists, representatives from diffrerent experimental schols and specialists from MoE. Workshop will support National service on RH in Turkmenistan.

Seminar on World Population Day


i)On July 10,1999 it was conducted a seminar on World Population Day
ii)Partricipated 80 people:journalists from TV, Radio and Mass Media, Diplomatic Courps, representatives from MOH, MOE, MCH Institute, Youth organisation
iii)Leding specialists made a speech and discussion in the seminar which gave full information on RH/FP, breast feeding and contracetion, AIDS and STD
iv)Seminar helped to determen and to eliminate doubts and apprehension on RH/FP
v)On the seminar participants were familiarized with the activity of the project and assistance for establishing relations between demography and population; about revenue and number of people in the family.; about social assesment and structure in the family.

Actions to disseminate updated information in RH issues among State Military Institute and State Policy Academy students

i) Two actions with assistance of local specialists in the RH field from Mother and Child health Institute, Medical Prevention and AIDS Control Center were conducted in the State Military Institute and Policy Academy on the subject:"Prevention of AIDS, STDs,drug abuse and their influence in RH of men and family in whole"
ii) Two questionnaires have been conducted to determined awareness of audience in the RH issues
iii) All audio-visual materials have been presented and shared among students
iv) Goal of the action is:" To involve men in RH"

Support Women NGOs working in RH field


The UNFPA office in Turkmenistan within the TUK/96/PO3 Project conducts its activities to assist NGOs engaged in the sphere of reproductive health. With great support of the UNFPA and UNESCO as well as international experts and the national experts of the government of Turkmenistan there has been done the significant work in collecting and analysing the information on the existing governmental and non-governmental organisations. Having investigated the situation in this direction, UNFPA decided to allocate mini-grants on competitive basis to NGOs after having conducted the workshop under the title of "Training of the Heads of NGOs on Designing Mini-projects in the Sphere of Reproductive Health Care" with collaborative efforts of UNDP, the Women Bureau named after Gurbansoltan-Eje, Counterpart Consortium representatives. 14 mini-projects participated in the competition. The competent commission consisted of 7 people - 3 representatives of UNFPA, 1 from UNDP, 1 from Counterpart Consortium, 1 from UNICEF, 1 from the Women Bureau named after Gurbansoltan-Eje selected 8 best mini projects corresponding the formats and the activities carried out by UNFPA. The total amount of grants equalled $ 34303. This practice encourages NGOs to enhance capacity of work towards improving RH in Turkmenistan. This is one of the major point of PoA ICPD. This activity was approved on the TPR Meeting having considered that it would be a precondition for the further UNFPA activity. On the second stage we have received 36 project proposals, Selection Committee which includes representatives from all UN agencies in Turkmenistan, USAID, Counterpart Consortium, Women Bureau (leading NGO in Turkmenistan). From 36 projects 18 projects awarded grants (see below list of NGOs awarded a grant). Total amount of grants is $45900. One of the project - publication of newspaper "Ene Mekhri" was extend till the end of the year. All submitted projects could be divided into four main groups:
