The Turkmenistan Demographic Health Survey
200 was sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Medical
Care with financial support provided by USAID through
UNFPA.

Objectives:
The Demographic and Health Survey in Turkmenistan (TDHS)
will collect data from a nationally-representative sample
of about 5600 women of reproductive age (i.e., from 15-49
years old). The TDHS has the following objectives:
- to
collect data which will allow the calculation of demographic
rates, particularly fertility and infant mortality
rates, at the national level and by urban and rural
strata of the population;
- to
measure the level of contraceptive knowledge and practice
by method at the national level and by urban and rural
strata;
- to
collect data pertaining to the reproductive health
of women (prenatal visits, place of and assistance
at delivery, rates of induced abortion) and the health
of their children (breastfeeding and supplementary
feeding practices, immunizations, and the prevalence
and treatment of childhood illnesses);
- to
collect data on knowledge of HIV/AIDS and sexually
transmitted infections(STI) and HIV/AIDS/STI prevention
behaviors of women and men.
- to
measure hemoglobin levels in the blood and the nutritional
status of women and their children by anthropometric
measurements: weight and height.
Organization of the TDHS
The TDHS is sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Medical
Industry of Turkmenistan. The Clinical Research Center
on Maternal and Child Health (MCH Center) and the National
Institute of Statistics and Information will implement
the survey. The Measure DHS+ program of Macro International
Inc. (MACRO) will provide funding and technical assistance
for the survey. UNFPA/ Ashgabat will be responsible for
the management of the funds being provided by MACRO to
the implementing organizations for the local costs of
survey operations. So that the data produced will be the
utmost utility to program managers and policy makers in
the health field, the implementing organizations will
collaborate with other organizations such as the Ministry
of Health and Medical Industry and the Cabinet of Ministers.
