HIV/AIDS
Prevention activities are included in the following
projects:
Improving RH Services and Access to Family
Planning in Turkmenistan IEC, Population policy and
advocacy Support to the National Program of Reproductive
Health Services in Turkmenistan AIDS/STI prevention
among vulnerable young women
The UNFPA contribution to AIDS Prevention and Control
Program is through technical support of AIDS prevention
service. UNFPA procured HIV kits to anonymous units
of AIDS prevention service and provision of condoms
for the ongoing UNAIDS project. UNFPA FO in Turkmenistan
is collaborating with 5 NGOs which undertake HIV/AIDS
prevention activities throughout the country. Several
workshops have been conducted on counseling for the
specialists of AIDS/STDRH/drug abuse services in Ashgabat.
UNFPA supports the inclusion of HIV/AIDS education and
information components in school program. UNFPA conducted
a few youth actions towards the support of HIV/AIDS
awareness campaigns. Within UNFPA some activities on
HIV/AIDS prevention have been carded by NGOs: School
of Health; "The health of family is health of generation";
Women Resource Center of Mary. Some actions were conducted
in the National Military Service and Policy Academy.
Nowadays thanks to geological location of Turkmenistan
and stable Muslim traditions in the regions the indicators
of AID prevalence stayed low in 1999-1 case of HIV and
1 case of AID. Number of preventive activities have
been carried out during shot period of time. 6 regional
AID centers have been established, equipped by UNFPA.
Very effectively anonymous units and hot lines have
been functioning. Starting from 1999 the Government
has been providing with HIV kits. Such specialists as
ob/gyns, venerologists have been trained. Training courses
youth specialists, actions among different group of
population (including group of risk) have been carried
out on a regular basis. During actions some video films,
evaluations, video spots are broadcast. Specialists
from RH trained by UNFPA units are involved for conducting
seminars and during these courses they get knowledge
on STI/HIV issues.
